Providing Independent Living Support for Adults with Learning Difficulties in South Gloucestershire

SMILE Gardening Group
The SMILE Gardening Group was established during the COVID-19 pandemic when we recognised the need for a safe, meaningful activity for our service users while many day services, hospitality venues and community activities were closed.
Based in the beautiful garden at the SMILE office, the group provides opportunities for people to learn practical gardening skills and develop knowledge about flowers, vegetables, wildlife and the natural environment. Service users take part in a variety of hands-on activities, including planting, maintaining the garden and creating wildlife-friendly spaces.
The group is led by Sadie, who enjoys planning exciting activities and is always keen to expand her own gardening knowledge. Together, we learn, support one another and celebrate our achievements as a team.
The SMILE Gardening Group focuses on teaching the skills needed to keep a garden thriving throughout the year, from understanding seasonal planting to growing vegetables and encouraging local wildlife. More importantly, it provides a welcoming space where people can connect with others, stay active, enjoy the outdoors and promote positive wellbeing.
When the weather isn't suitable for outdoor gardening, we move indoors for creative activities linked to gardening and wildlife. These include birdhouse making, indoor planting projects and a range of seasonal crafts. We also occasionally visit local garden centres to gather ideas, research new plants and help plan future projects for the garden.
Through these activities, our aim is to help service users build confidence, develop independence, try new experiences and enjoy a happier, more fulfilling lifestyle. Above all, the Gardening Group is about having fun, making friends and creating plenty of laughter along the way.
